Bio
Hunter Johnson went from small-town New Mexico tennis kid to one of the most dZane Ford went from Pittsburgh tennis prodigy to one of the most dangerous young singles players in professional pickleball. Born and raised in the Pittsburgh area, he picked up a racket after getting tired of watching his parents play tennis at their local club. His raw aggression at the net convinced his parents to take him to Saddlebrook Academy in Florida for an evaluation at age seven, and by 14 he had moved from Pittsburgh to Naples to chase a pro tennis career full-time.
Ford climbed to a top 5 junior ranking in the United States on the ITF circuit and reached a career-high world junior ranking of 137. He was the No. 1 recruit in Pennsylvania for the tennis class of 2023. When college decisions came around, he turned down a Division I scholarship and bet on the growing pro pickleball scene instead.
Career Timeline:
- 2018–2022: Trained in Naples, Florida; competed on the ITF junior circuit with a top 5 U.S. junior ranking and peak ITF world ranking of 137
- 2023: Turned professional in pickleball instead of accepting a D-I tennis scholarship; began competing on the APP Tour
- 2024: Won APP Next Gen Dallas singles; took silver at the APP Vlasic Classic in Cincinnati; reached first PPA Championship Sunday with a silver medal in men’s singles at the Daytona Beach Open
- 2025: Signed with Six Zero Pickleball (Ruby 14mm); drafted by the New York Hustlers in MLP; upset Ben Johns at the PPA CIBC Texas Open; reached the Daytona Beach Open semifinal; finished the year inside the PPA top 15 in men’s singles
- 2026: Reached quarterfinals at Indoor Nationals and Cape Coral; won silver in men’s singles at the PPA Fasenra Sacramento Open, beating No. 3 seed Hunter Johnson in the quarterfinal before falling to Federico Staksrud in the final
Ford’s game is built on pure first-strike aggression. He swings hard on drives, runs a high-tempo baseline pattern more common in tennis than pickleball, and leans on passing shots and power serves to pressure opponents who would rather reset and dink. His on-court “yeahs” and boisterous body language have rubbed some opponents the wrong way, but the results keep climbing as he fills in the softer areas of his doubles game.
