Hayden Patriquin is one of the most exciting young players in professional pickleball, and his path to the top is unlike almost anyone else on tour. Born and raised in Yucaipa, California, he spent 12 years playing baseball before his grandfather introduced him to pickleball at age 13 in 2019. With no racquet sport experience to fall back on, he built his game entirely from scratch — a fact that makes his rapid ascent all the more striking.

By 16, he had walked away from baseball entirely and turned professional in 2022. His debut year turned heads almost immediately: at the 2022 APP Mesa Open, he defeated Rafa Hewett, who was ranked #16 in men’s singles at the time, signaling that this wasn’t going to be a slow build. To give himself more time to train and drill with top players, Patriquin enrolled in online school, a decision that accelerated his development considerably.

Career Timeline:

  • 2019: Introduced to pickleball by grandfather at age 13
  • 2022: Turned professional at 16; defeated top-20 ranked Rafa Hewett at APP Mesa Open debut
  • 2023: Drafted by Brooklyn Aces (28th overall pick, MLP Season 2); reached quarterfinals in men’s singles at PPA Championships in Las Vegas
  • 2024: Broke out with 10 podium finishes including gold at PPA Tour Finals (with Staksrud) and USAPA Nationals (with Newman); defeated world No. 1 Ben Johns twice
  • 2025: Won PPA Pickleball World Championships gold in men’s doubles with Staksrud; won MLP Cup title with the St. Louis Shock; signed as a face of The Picklr alongside Anna Bright and Connor Garnett

Known for explosive serves, lightning-quick reflexes, and a lethal two-handed backhand that generates sharp angles most players can’t handle. His aggressive and flashy style has made him one of the most watchable players on tour, and his comfort defeating higher-ranked opponents regularly suggests his ceiling hasn’t come close to being tested yet.

How did Hayden get into pickleball with no racquet sport background?

His grandfather introduced him to the game at 13, and what started as casual backyard play quickly turned into serious competition. Without any tennis or racquetball habits to unlearn, Patriquin developed a game built specifically for pickleball — which many believe is a big reason why his two-handed backhand and court instincts look so natural.
