Bio
Hunter Johnson went from small-town New Mexico tennis kid to one of the most dangerous singles players in professional pickleball. Born in Santa Fe and raised in the ski town of Taos, he and his identical twin brother Yates fell in love with tennis early and eventually gave up baseball to commit to it full-time. Both brothers earned scholarships to play Division I tennis at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, where they became the winningest doubles team in school history with a career-high national ranking of #15 in doubles and #30 in singles.
Career Timeline:
- 2012–2017: Collegiate tennis at University of Louisiana at Lafayette (transferred), then SMU; graduated with a degree in Applied Physiology & Sports Management
- 2016: Helped SMU reach their first NCAA Sweet 16 appearance in 23 years
- 2017–2021: Professional tennis career; won 14 pro doubles titles (13 ITF Futures, 1 ATP Challenger), reached career-high ATP doubles ranking of #198 (2021), defeated Alexander Zverev and Félix Auger-Aliassime in lower-level events, practiced with Roger Federer
- 2022: Transitioned to professional pickleball alongside twin brother Yates; competed on the APP Tour
- 2023: Won 10 APP Tour gold medals; became APP pro men’s medal leader
- 2024: Moved to the PPA Tour (seeded #35 at first event); won first PPA title at Atlanta Slam in September
- 2025: Won singles gold at Tucson Open, reached PPA #1 in men’s singles in August, won men’s doubles gold with CJ Klinger at Atlanta Pickleball Championships
Known for pioneering a baseline-heavy singles strategy that turned traditional pickleball on its head. Rather than rushing the net after the return, Johnson stays back and trades heavy topspin groundstrokes until he finds the right ball to attack. His continental forehand grip generates extreme spin, and his tennis-trained serve is one of the fastest on tour. The approach has been widely imitated across the PPA Tour, but few execute it as effectively as Johnson.
